Photos of Mazargues Commonwealth War Cemetery and a soldiers headstone therein

Yesterday, on Remembrance Day, I attended the Mazargues Commonwealth War Cemetery. I was the only one there. At 1100 am, I played The Last Post from my phone. I stopped at the grave of Lt. Greenberg of the SAAF. I had been at his grave before. He died at 28 in a plane crash while landing here in fog and bad weather.

This time, I noticed that the Hebrew lettering on his grave was actually upside down and backward. When home, I sent a note to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in England pointing out to them the error. In less than 24 hours they responded, with acknowledgement of the error. They advised that a new headstone had been ordered and will be installed soonest.

We will not forget.

Post Script – Since writing this last week, I have been in touch with a granddaughter of Lt. Greenberg  (“Tanny” as he was known) who now lives in Perth, Australia. She told me of her grandfather (see  https://www.slideshare.net/PaulGreenberg2/story-of-harry-noel-greenberg-tanny) who was quite the person, as they all were. She also told me of her family visit here in 2012 including her participating in a ceremony in Vitrolles (a small town near the airport) in honour of her grandfather and the other victims of the plane crash. The error on the grave missed her  eye on that visit and she was appreciative that it will be corrected.
